(EN) How to make your own hand sanitizer

(Recipe following WHO formula recommendation that you can make at home)

Hey, what's your relationship with the hand sanitizer? Hate it or love it, you need to embrace it. These days, it can make a difference between being sick or staying healthy. I tried dozens of hand sanitizers but honestly, I hated all: too sticky, too liquid, too smelly, some making my hands so dry that it could crack open and bleed. All this led to taking things into my own hands, so I decided to make it myself. It was a complete success, I must confess the result it's kinda addictive. We decided not to sell it, but share it so you can make it yourself at home. Needless to say, the production of the hand sanitizer at home is quite cheap, so it will save you a lot of money, too!

One final note before we dive into the actual process: the hand sanitizer shared here is 100% natural, has an alcohol concentration of 79% alcohol (the minimum should be 60%, otherwise won't be efficient). Besides this, this original recipe that you can easily make at home has pure essential oils that are known for their anti-microbial effects. On top of that, it smells so great and your hands will be safe after multiple uses each day. You can also make more and offer it as a gift to friends and family. Safety is important so it should be accessible and available to all.

Tools needed:

  • one glass container to make the mix
  • one scale (kitchen scale will do)
  • spray bottle

For 100 ml you will need:

    • Food grade alcohol (Ethanol 96%)
    • Hydrogen Peroxide 3% from your local pharmacy
    • Aloe Vera gel
    • Sterile distilled or boiled water
    • Pure essential oils: Lemon, Grapefruit, Lemongrass

The alcohol if efficient in killing the actual bacteria and viruses, Hydrogen Peroxide 3% is an efficient disinfectant and helps to eliminate contaminating spores. Aloe Vera gel is a humectant and an emollient that is non-toxic and will help protect your hands from the harshness of alcohol. The essential oils will add an extra protection layer. You can read more on Internet about how efficient is lemon for example in killing mold, bacteria, and germs, along with lemongrass and other citrus oils.

Formula below for 100gr of hand sanitizer:

DYI Hand Sanitizer

You can use the below quantities for a guarantied successful formula, or you can test and add your own. It's important though to not change the 3.6% of essential oil, out of the total.

You can do less or more, you just have to keep the percentages. If you want to do 50 grams, you need to divide all by 2, if you want to do more at once, you can multiply the quantities until you reach your desired final quantity. You should give it a rest of at least 48 hours.

Put everything in a spray bottle for a nice mist. Spray your hands thoroughly, rub them well together and there you go, you can scratch your nose again! That should be it! If you have questions or something is not clear, we would be happy to help you with the process. Do it now, thank us later. Enjoy and stay safe!

PS: Don't forget to wash your hands! Of all, this is the most efficient thing you can do!
